WHEN SHE VANISHED Amazon Review
A Suspense Story That Hit Me Emotionally

When She Vanished by Paige Manning completely hooked me from the beginning. What started as a missing person mystery quickly turned into an emotional story about grief, obsession, and how far someone will go for the people they love.
The story centers around Detective Lisa Cole, and I honestly loved her as a main character because she felt so real. She’s determined and sharp, but also emotionally exhausted from the toll the investigation has taken on her family. Her relationship with her husband Joe added so much depth to the story because you could see how her refusal to stop searching for answers was slowly pulling their marriage apart. Some of the quieter scenes between them felt just as intense as the actual mystery.
The disappearance of their daughter Lillian was heartbreaking from the start, and the flashbacks of Lisa remembering little moments with her made the story even more emotional. One scene that really stayed with me was when Lisa went back through Lillian’s bedroom late at night, holding onto the hope that she had missed some tiny clue. You could feel her desperation and guilt in those moments.
The suspense really builds when Lisa starts uncovering secrets connected to the wooded area near the cabin and realizes that people around her may not be telling the full truth. I loved how the author slowly revealed pieces of the mystery instead of rushing through it. Every time I thought I had figured out what happened to Lillian, another twist completely changed everything.
What made this book stand out to me was the balance between the thriller elements and the emotional family drama. Lisa isn’t written as some perfect detective—she’s a mother who is grieving, angry, determined, and falling apart all at once. That made her journey feel believable and heartbreaking.
By the final chapters, I honestly couldn’t stop reading. The tension, the emotional payoff, and the twists all came together perfectly. If you enjoy suspense novels that keep you emotionally invested while still delivering a genuinely gripping mystery, this is definitely one worth picking up.
WHAT WE BURIED ARC review
Edge Of Your Seat Suspense
Paige Manning’s "What We Buried" is the gripping sequel to "When She Vanished", continuing the tense, character-driven crime saga of Sheriff Joe Brody and his daughter Lily. The story picks up where the first book left off, so it is recommended to read the first book prior to reading this one. While you may not feel lost if you read "What We Buried" without reading When She Vanished, you will have missed out on a lot of the back story and character development from the first book. Manning masterfully blends suspense with emotional depth. The narrative alternates between Lily’s cautious return to normalcy and Joe’s relentless pursuit of justice, creating a dual perspective that deepens the stakes. She captures Lily's strength and instinct so well, making her a character I love to read about. The tension builds steadily, with each chapter hinting at danger without revealing too much, keeping readers on edge. The prose is lean and urgent, mirroring the relentless pace of the plot. Manning expertly creates characters that have intense depth and emotional range. Even the secondary characters add depth, and the antagonist’s network is introduced with enough ambiguity to fuel speculation. The scene between David and Joe at the end of chapter 24 shows how protective Joe is, in a healthy way, and makes the reader really root for him to find his daughter. Manning has the ability to keep readers at the edge of their seats, unable to predict what will happen next. This is a book that will leave readers feeling both satisfied and eager for more from Paige Manning. Manning knows her audience well and provides everything they desire to keep readers coming back for more time and time again. The novel explores the theme of some truths being too dangerous to keep buried, and that survival often demands unity. If you enjoy crime fiction that balances personal stakes with relentless suspense, this is a compelling choice to add to your to be read list. Those who enjoy suspense thrillers would undoubtedly enjoy this book as well. This is a book that will linger in your mind for days, even weeks after reading it.
WHAT WE BURIED Amazon Review
Definite page turner...

What We Buried by Paige Manning is a tense and emotionally charged thriller that builds on the trauma and unfinished danger surrounding the Brody family. In this installment, Lisa has been reinstated as a detective, and she and Joe are assigned a new case after a dead body is found on a hiking trail in the forest. The investigation quickly becomes more chilling when they receive a note from the killer warning, “I’m watching and you won’t find her this time.” As Lisa and Joe push forward, more buried secrets in the town begin to surface, making it clear that the past is still very much alive and may hold the key to solving the case.
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is its ability to balance action with emotional weight. Manning writes with urgency, but the book is not driven by plot alone; it also pays close attention to trust, betrayal, loyalty, and the strain that fear places on a family and a community. The suspense keeps the story moving, especially as Lisa and Joe become more determined than ever to find the killer and uncover the truth behind the secrets people in town are still hiding. That layered mystery makes the novel a definite page-turner and one that keeps the reader guessing. The book succeeds because it makes danger feel personal, not distant, and that gives the story a sharper emotional edge. For readers who enjoy thrillers with strong family dynamics and psychological tension, What We Buried offers both momentum and heart.
Personally, this book made me reflect on how difficult it can be to truly leave the past behind. Even when people survive something terrible, survival does not automatically create peace, and this story captures that truth well. I was especially struck by the idea that families are often held together not because they are free of secrets or pain, but because they choose to keep fighting for one another anyway. That reflection made the novel feel more meaningful to me than a standard thriller. Beneath the danger and suspense, What We Buried becomes a story about endurance, trust, and the complicated process of trying to build safety after life has been shattered. Prepare to be awed.
WHEN SHE VANISHED ARC review
Fast paced mystery crime thriller!
Detective Lisa Cole knows what it’s like to work in dangerous situations and get hurt in the line of duty. She has spent her career putting criminals behind bars, but nothing could prepare her for the moment her own young daughter, Lily, is quietly taken from her home. Lisa is left trying to survive the unimaginable loss of her child. The grief becomes overwhelming, sending her into a deep depression and causing her to walk away from the life she once knew, including her marriage. Just a few years later, another young girl goes missing, and Lisa is asked to help investigate the case. Taking on this investigation unexpectedly brings her and her husband back into each other’s lives, forcing them both to face the pain and unanswered questions they have carried for years. When Lisa realizes the missing girl looks eerily similar to her own daughter, she becomes determined to uncover whether there is a connection between the two disappearances. “But if you chase ghosts from your past, we risk missing the real perpetrators in the present.” Lisa knows she cannot ignore the similarities, and as she spends countless hours digging through the evidence, she begins uncovering clues that could finally connect Katie Palmer’s disappearance to the mystery surrounding her own daughter. The deeper she goes, the more questions arise, and Lisa refuses to stop until she finds the truth. But I don’t think she could have prepared herself for what she was going to uncover. This entire storyline had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I couldn’t put this book down because the suspense kept building with every chapter. I cannot imagine the heartbreak of losing a child and trying to find a way forward after such a devastating loss. Lisa’s journey was emotional, intense, and filled with determination. This was a gripping thriller that kept me invested in finding out the truth right alongside her.
